Crowning glory
Well if you thought the previous cake was elegant, how about regal? All I’ve done here is take off the buttercream cupcakes, added a crown and some porcelain-looking flowers. The Toronto Star was running an ad for The Good Food Festival coming to the International Centre. The contest involved decorating a cake in honour of the upcoming Royal Wedding of Will and Kate on April 29, 2011. To enter the contest, you needed to submit a photo of a cake that you had made that had a “Royal Wedding” theme. So I did what any good cake decorator would do, I took the cake that I had made and I changed it up a little, took a picture and sent it in.
Well, incredibly I was chosen as one of three finalists to participate in the final contest during the festival on the day of the wedding. With all the talk about Will & Kate’s upcoming wedding and the possibilities for a royal cake, this seemed like something that people would be interested in watching while attending the festival. Now all I had to do was come up with a design that I could execute in one hour – the amount of time we would have to decorate a cake in front of a live audience, for a panel of judges.
