A royal cake-off

Here I am working on my design at the International Centre in front of an audience while the judges field questions from the audience. The clock is ticking away and I’m intensely trying to execute my design.

When someone gives you the wrong dimensions ...

 

No, you’re not seeing things, the fleur de leas really are taller than the cake tier … we were given the cake dimensions pre-contest, unfortunately just not the right ones.  Since all of my designs were pre-made I didn’t have many options.  I can think of things I would do now, but at the time, I just went with it.

Me posing with Food Network celebrity Duff Goldman of Ace of Cakes, my cake took home second place. Getting the opportunity to be in the contest, meeting Duff and stepping up my design skills was a whole new experience for me.  It made me think about the possibilities cake and design could offer me. If this was the world of cake, I was hooked and I couldn’t wait to see how things would continue to bake out.
